Drupal Terminology

You are missing some Flash content that should appear here! Perhaps your browser cannot display it, or maybe it did not initialize correctly.

The wait is over. Geeks and God is baaaaaaack. After our few month hiatus we are back, rejuvenated, and ready to geek out.

We have always welcomed feedback and questions (and LOVED getting them!)...In the past we've asked for emails, audio files, and voicemails, which isn't changing. If you have something to say: We wanna hear it! However, starting this year, we have a whole new way for you to share what you find on the Internet with us. Just tag the content (picture, article, whatever) on del.icio.us with "4geeksandgod" and we'll get it. Maybe it's an article that caught your eye, a cool church website, or just your favorite place on the net. In any case, let us know, we'd love to share it with all our listeners.

We come back after our break diving head first into a new series in which we share the ins and outs of Drupal, the high powered content management system. Our hope in this series is to help churches and ministries learn enough about drupal to get the basics, install it, get a site up and running...Then be able to maintain it without anything getting out of control. This first episode we start out with the basics of what drupal is and the terms we will use throughout the rest of the series.

Geeks and God is back. We hope you will geek out with us in this new year.

Welcome Back!

You Guys are Awesome!

Hey Guys!
Yeah, we're totally pumped to be back doing the podcast (if you couldn't tell). We've gotten so many kind words in the few hours since the launch, it's really encouraging...It's awesome to know there's folks that wanna use tech to help advance The Kingdom.

Thanks for listening, we're truly humbled...

Glad to see you again!

Hey guys! Glad to see your back and at it again! I think I may have gotten the podcast right after you guys uploaded it because iTunes was having some troubles. Anyway, I love the new website! It looks great!

I'm looking forward to all the Drupal shows in the near future. I've been waiting for Drupal 5.0 to be released and I see it just came out about 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for the link

Thanks for the reference and link over at http://www.grupenet.com. We appreciate it. You rock.

Drupal

I just did my church's site with Drupal. It was my first time using Drupal, and I loved it. I would encourage any church to look into it. I haven't listened to the episode yet because I'm staying at the hospital each night with my wife (should have my first child soon). However, I'm looking forward to the series. I'm sure there'll be lots for me to learn.

Congratulations

Congratulations. Children are a true blessing.

What theme did you use?

Hi Mike,

What theme did you use for your church's site?

Steve

Zen Theme

I started with the Zen Theme and modified it, much like the guys talk about in a later episode. Sorry my response it a little late.

Great to have you back!

Fantastic to see a new episode of Geeks & God. Nice update to the site too!

Welcome back doesn't say it all - Praise the LORD!

There's not a lot of good Christian Tech Podcasts out there, but Geeks & God is a great podcasts, it's great to have you back on my iPod.

Welcome back fellas.

I'd like to see if we could maybe get a shared podcast delivered sometime, with G&G and ours at God's Mac. Let me know what you think? I appreciate you talking more about Drupal. I've been too much of a Flash geek in the past, lol. Wolverines taste like chicken.

Next Drupal episode

Please cover in the installing Drupal episode - what the system requirements are. I want to install Drupal and work with it as the next NINE episodes come out, but I need to know what kind of Hardware I need to acquire. I want to set it up on a stand alone box, (or perhaps in a VM). We have some donated machines but I'm not sure they'll meet the requirements. Let us know. Thanks!!!

On the list

We will cover system requirements and throw in how to install and test it locally on some systems.

welcom Back!

that is great great great!
I just finished our drupal church site at http://www.westwinds.org and this podcast will totally help!

Image Preloading

I checked out your site and it looks cool. The only thing is that the menu background takes a second to load. You may want to preload it.

If you were using drupal 5 I would tell you the jquery way to image preloading.

But, in 4.7 which you are using the easiest way may be to preload is via CSS. If you want to the change is pretty simple.

Change:
<table width="900" height="175" border="0" cellpadding="10" background="/themes/warped/images/menu-white.png">

To:
<table width="900" height="175" border="0" cellpadding="10" id="mymenuid">

and add to your themes style.css file:
#mymenuid {
background:url(images/menu-white.png);
}

Just my 2 cents. I think it's time I go and turn off my computer now.

Forum

Hi again guys.

Just wanting to know if you use any extra modules in your forum setup. I can't seem to get mine working properly. I can access the forums, and I can make a COMMENT on a topic within a forum but I can't post replies, or see the comments made on the topics. At the moment my forum is just working like a threaded post setup (if that makes sense!)

Any clues?!

Andy.

Forum Module

We aren't using anything other than the core forum module. That's it. The way it looks and behaves is just settings and some theming. Though there are some modules you may want to look at:

http://drupal.org/project/formtweaker
http://drupal.org/project/formfilter
http://drupal.org/project/forum_access

and you may want to make a separate page-forum.tpl.php page to theme this part of the site differently. Note: This only works in version 5.

Hmmm

Thanks Matt.

I guess I'll have to play some more. I wasn't aware of coding anything out of the forum module so I thought the replies, threads etc would still be there.

I'll take a look at those links.

Hooray!

Matt & Rob

I'm so glad to have found this site. I immediately listened to one of your mp3 clips and I thought it was great :) I was afraid to dive into Drupal but you guys made it really easy for me to get started!

I don't have a church/ministry site, but I am a Christian web designer and have to say I really appreciate your site and having found you guys! I am currently working on a Drupal site for a community organization, you can see it in development at spjc.bwoodsdesign.com. So far, so good! This site uses a very modified version of B7 theme for 5.1x.

Much of what you guys have had to say about church sites have been very helpful in me getting this site going!

Thanks again,
BJ from St. Paul, MN

Love to hear this stuff...

Yo BJ...
Awesome, man...we love to hear we're actually helping folks get Christian websites up and runnning. That makes it all worth it for us.

God bless and welcome to the G&G community!
