Anyone know a module or other technique to allow users to save a draft of their writing?

Revisions or Don't Publish

A couple of ways: First, you could just not publish the content. At the bottom, under publish settings, just uncheck 'published'. When you're ready to publish, edit the node and check publish...

There's also revisioning built into drupal. I'm not a hundred percent sure how to use it (and i think it's in core, not an add on), but there's a bunch of modules that expand this capability....MF is more the expert on doing this. Also, check out this videocast on a cool feature set too....

revisioning and more

Revisioning is one way to do revisions. That's something that just needs the permissions turned on for it in the node type settings and in access control.

Other than that not publishing something leaves it as a draft. If you want to look at differences in a draft check out the diff module.

Also, check out that autosave module to automatically save the content.

Or, if you like you can use the workflow module and set one of the states as being a draft.

There are a number of options depending on exactly what you want to do.
