permissions woes

I have been having permission issues with regard to drupal and the use of my apache server.

I have no problem creating a data base for drupal. I've used CLI, MySQL Administrator, PHPmyadmin and webmin to create the drupal database with all permissions for user. No problem creating or dropping the database.

If I drop the drupal files into my public_html folder I loose access to that server via the firefox browser when seeking any URL on http://localhost/~user/*.

I'd prefer not to use var/www for server purposes. When I do the drupal install.php gives me an ok for user and password but not access to the database.

Make sense to anyone ;) ?

Any help is appreciated

resembles a Ubuntu/Apache challenge

Is this a dedicated server or virtural server where you control the works or some form of shared hosting?

I changed my Apacche Ubuntu 6.06 LTS setup from var/www to something off a web branch on a user directory a long while back, but I'm using a dedicated server (for me its an old box I occasionally use locally... just for development and testing).

Thanks for the reply. This

Thanks for the reply.

This server is dedicated for development and testing. I use it to build sites and I "control the works."

Ha Hah! Got it working. Had to shut my firewall off and a few other little tweaks with my head and my computer. I am totally jazzed. Now to make my own template.
