Rob and I have talked about this more than a few times. I think this would be a really great idea.
Our biggest issue is that so much of what we do is fairly custom on each site. If there was a church distribution that would be one thing. It would be much easier to tie it to the features there.
My biggest problem is I am not a designer :-). I could make a theme. But, it would be much much better if a designer did it.

With all the talented designers, it'd be an interesting idea if some of the Drupal developers here could make a few themes for churches and/or ministries to use. This might get those non-Drupal users going in the right direction with their church sites...
