Hi everybody this is my first post here and I want to know if someone can help me find a free and open source Bible software. I need to read the word of God everyday and since am an IT guy I want to use my computer for that. Can anyone suggest any good one?

Program or Web

Are you looking for a program or website? What OS? There are so many out there I'm not sure where to start.

Is there a particular type of translation you are looking for? Easy to read? Essentially literal (ends up being harder to read)?

Desktop App Please

I need a desktop application for both my Linux(Ubuntu) and Windows Xp machines. The NIV and KJV would do just fine (together that is). It would be nice if it were something I can translate too. You see I'm Ethiopia and we use Amharic here. Sorry for the shopping-list style request. Thanks for your help Matt.

Here are a couple

Here are a couple options...

e-sword for windows: http://www.e-sword.net/

sword project widows and linux: http://www.crosswire.org/sword/index.jsp

In place of the NIV in these you may want to try the ESV. Some translations like the NIV require you to pay so you won't find them for free.

I haven't tried this one, but

I haven't tried this one, but it looks interesting

I have downloaded this one, but I haven't used it much

I use this one on my USB stick, it's small, but very useful

And, of course.... as mentioned above, eSword is great. It has features that even my big $$ bible software doesn't have.

As an aside, if you've purchased bible study software, what kind do you have? What do you like/dislike about it? I use Biblesoft PC Study Bible which I've had for several years. Over the years I've upgraded and purchased various plug-ins so it's pretty complete. Generally, I like it, though with every "improvement" the interface seems to get more confusing. Or I'm getting to old to learn new stuff... :P

Accordance

I use Accordance on the computer mainly. It has alot to offer. There are many Bibles available for it, when I first bought it I got a NIV package and also a Spanish CD. I've added on to it since then. The program has a good interface, has many capabilities for either personal study or if you want to do advanced study. Resources are linked to the Bible text and another advantage is that one can easily create one's own tools. The company also provides excellent customer support. If you check their forums they have people replying to peoples questions and comments.

I also have MacSword, part of 'the Sword Project', on my computer. I find it has a nice interface for just reading the Bible. I think it is a good choice if a person doesn't have much money to spend on a program.
