More than just podcasting

I really enjoy your podcasts, and while I have listened to a few, there is more to being a geek than the web. I would like to hear about new networking and software solutions for computers, or the hottest new gadgets and things that can be taken apart. (like the new eeepc by asus) The web and websites are great, but I think that the church needs to be concerned with net security and the likes. I am just a younger...(at least I like to think I am) geek that is interested in more than podcasting. I hope I don't sound like I am complaining, I have to be up for work at 6am, and I should have gone to bed 30 mins ago. :-)

Sharing our Expertise...

Hey Jeremiah,
We couldn't agree more! Ministries should be involved in many of the technology outside of the web and they can all benefit them a great deal....

However, MF and I are not experts in those areas. We are, however, experts in building Web 2.0 style websites. So, that's what we talk about. We leave all that stuff to any other podcast who has the expertise to discuss it...because we don't.

I think we're firm believers in: "Do what God has gifted you to do" and "Don't try to be an expert at everything, because it's impossible", so we only talk about what we know...and we know the web.

Anyone have any other Christian podcasts that talk about other areas of ministry technology? For me, the only two that comes immediately to mind are ChurchTechTalk and The UberGeek Podcast.

I know there are others, but those are what come to mind right away...

So, I would suggest: Don't think of this podcast as the be-all, end-all in church tech podcasting. There's TONS of others out there that talk about the issues we don't, yet there are none that talk about exactly what we do...so we need to keep filling the gap God has shown us.

Thanks for the input!

Church IT Podcast

Another church tech podcast is the Church IT Podcast. This tends to focus on true IT issues, but also includes things like church management software, and various cool software tools.

The podcast is actually a talk cast where up to 20 church IT professionals and volunteers talk live via TalkShoe, but they also record it for people who can't participate live. It is hosted by Jason Powell, who is the Church IT guru at Granger Community Church in northern Indiana.

Some Other Areas

You'll find that we have talked about some other areas in the past. We've talked about audio setups (Rob is an audio nut), we've talked IT, we've talked networking. These last few series have been based off of what people seem to want to listen to the most. It's based on the emails we get, the most downloaded podcasts in the past, keywords people search when they come here, and more.

These days we are very much web people and since our concentration is there that is what we tend to talk about. Plus, the church isn't very good with web technology in general.

I imagine we will touch on some other things in the future. But, be warned that we will only talk about the things we are really capable of talking about. Unless we have a guest on that knows can talk to a topic we will stay away from things we don't know.

Stick with it

I personally like that you stick with the things you know. In one of your recent podcasts, and a few others, it is stated that you purposefully do this to maintain the quality of the show.

Since you do NO research. Boy I laughed when I heard that, but sometimes experience is the best research. It would make sense that you do not venture out because I think you would seriously get strapped for time and then none of us would enjoy the show as much.

One thing that I would like to comment on though. It was a refreshing surprise to see a big change on the show. That you end the show with a prayer. It makes sense guys and did not go unnoticed. Keep it up.

Prayer on the Show

Hey Rick...
It's interesting you noted the prayer on the show. However, I think this will probably be a "Once a Year" occurrence. Here's why:

A very large silent majority of our listeners are not Christians. We know that and we appreciate them and respect their views. Therefore, while we're not ashamed to target our content at those we really want to help (churches and ministries) we also want to be sensitive of the fact that not everyone is comfortable sitting thru a prayer every week. This all goes along with the Apostle Paul's principals of not eating meat if it offends those you're dining with or, heck, even more blatantly Jesus' suggestion that we not pray on the street corners. (which I think is an appropriate metaphor for what MF and I are doing...talking from our virtual-soapboxes on a cyber-streetcorner)

So, while I appreciate what you're saying and I hear your heart, it will probably remain as a single end-of-the-year occurrence.

Thanks for your input, Rick!
