1) is there a buddylist module for drupal?
2) is there a way(module) to allow users to rank content and/or other users (like a thumbs or down, for example - and that ranking allows users and/or content to be accessed in different ways)?

it looks like buddylist does
it looks like buddylist does not work for 6.2 :(
D5
You might want to consider building you site with Drupal 5 for now. Many of the modules you might be looking for are just not updated yet.
Building a site with drupal 5 is a safe bet. It should have a longer support cycle than previous releases. I'm not expecting drupal 7 to be out for some time (maybe a year from now).
If the drupal 6 modules aren't there go with drupal 5.

Seriously
Seriously... there is nothing to installing drupal. It has an install script with it. It's really, really simple to do. i used to use fantastico, cuase I was scared... but you just upload everything in your directory, then type in the address, and it starts the installer.
if you are using cPanel, just make a database in the mysql GUI.

I agree with the install for
I agree with the install for Drupal. Drupal 6 is much better for easy install than any previous version of Drupal.
I do not recommend Fantastico or other auto-installers for isntalling Drupal. Many times, they are not as quick to stay up to date with security patches. Also, updating your site once it is installed from Fantastico can be a problem. It is much better to do as Anthony mentions and install the standard Drupal way. Instructions can be found in the README.txt that comes with Drupal.
Thanks!

Agree
I agree with the others. Just install it yourself. Correct me if Im wrong here. But doesnt fantastico only do the initial install of Drupal? All updates are responsibility of the user correct?
If thats the case your going to have to learn to play with installing and updating anyways. Just try installing it yourself. Were all here if you need help.
but why would i want to backward in time?
but why would i want to backward in time? i already have a couple sites that are on 6.2... i don't want to recreate the wheel :)
Thanks!!

You Will With 6.2
I think the idea here is that many of the modules you will want to use are not updated to drupal 6 yet. So, if you want to build on it you will either have to wait a few months for them to get there, update the modules yourself, pay someone to update them for you, or build your site with drupal 5 now.
That's basically your set of options. All of my short term work is still done in drupal 5. Long lead sites are drupal 6.
