We use www.planningcenteronline.com. On a weekly basis we schedule over 75 volunteers with it. It is focused on worship planning, but can be used for just about any volunteer ministry if you only used the scheduling section of the software.

I have built a tool called Church Director which offers many of the features you want. Check out http://www.churchdirector.com - if you are interested in getting early access, simply fill out the beta signup form and I'll make sure you get an early access account.
Check out this previous thread...

They have a free level, which limits the number of volunteers you can schedule, but it would probably be a good thing to check out and test with.

Here is a tool that has an automatic scheduling engine and a web-based part that allows volunteers to login and access their own schedules, request substitutes, etc. If you like to schedule around peoples preferences and availability, or don't want to require online sign-up, the auto scheduler is very useful:
Ministry Scheduler Pro - Church Volunteer Scheduling Software
Hope that helps!
Sorry, I did not copy the link correctly in the last post. Here it is:
Ministry Scheduler Pro - Church Volunteer Scheduling Software
We use VolunteerSpot.com to schedule our meals ministry, sunday school helpers, coffee and donuts, and Wednesday speakers. It's totally free and easy online volunteer scheduling software. What we love is that ANYONE can initiate the volunteer request with their service group and people get email reminders of their upcoming commitments. This is really important b/c so many at our church take leadership roles. We host a soup kitchen three nights a week, and we're moving everyone to VolunteerSpot this month. I was so impressed with their simple tool, I volunteered to help them spread the word. www.VolunteerSpot.com
James,
I noticed your posting here and would love to be a part of your beta group. I am our Mission & Outreach director and would like to use the site to manage my volunteers for local projects, then hopefully expand it to include other volunteer positions in the church. I have tried planningcenteronline.com but it really works best for Worship planning and I had a hard time getting it to work for other volunteer needs.
John - first off, I love your title!
Go ahead and get started today with VolunteerSpot. They are still in beta - but that just means that they are fine-tuning how the screens look, and adding new features. Just yesterday they added a cool view that lets us see our whole monthly schedule - what's full and what spots are still open, at a glance. Our volunteers love it, and I do too. They sincerely want feedback (and listen) - so let them know what you think.

Another tool that works very well for church volunteer scheduling is Hello Scheduling. Our tool is in beta right now, but it is free to sign up. One of the great reasons to try a beta tool is that you get to shape the tool to fit your needs. If there are specific features you need for scheduling your volunteers, me and my team will be happy to create them. Check us out: Hello Scheduling - Church Scheduling Software
Thanks,

If you haven't checked out VolunteerSpot in a while, please do so! Lots of new features let you customize how you invite volunteers, print reports, download data, etc. Especially with VBS getting organized now, we're here to help save time and make it easy for anyone to coordiante volunteers and request needed help and supplies. New videos show you how it works - please take a look. http://www.VolunteerSpot.com
Our church is using some new software call elvanto. It is super easy to quickly create services and roster volunteers on. We can also add blog posts, pages and songs:
You may want to try one of Rotunda's programs. They have Ministry Scheduler Pro (to schedule people for Sunday services), Volunteer Scheduler Pro to schedule volunteers for various outreach ministries and Volunteer Scheduler Pro for Events.
I'm getting ready to take over as Sunday Service Coordinator at my church, and part of my responsibility will be to schedule the volunteers each week. Since we're meeting in a school right now and are basically a church in a box, we have quite a few volunteers on Sunday mornings. What I'm looking for is an easy way to manage a list of all of my currently volunteers, and also be able to create schedules and email them out each week. In a perfect world I could find something where I could keep a list of all the volunteers and which areas they volunteer in, then when I'm making the schedule for the week I could add people to the schedule by choosing off of the various lists. Then once everything is finalized I could email the schedule out to my team leaders to convey everything to their volunteers.
Does anyone know of anything like this? If it was a web based app that would be the best, though anything that gives me that kind of functionality would work. If it isn't web based it would need to support a mac though, as that's all I 'll really be using. I've checked out stafftool.com and some of the others stuff I found mentioned here and can't really find anything that gives me the scheduling functionality I'm looking for.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
