The topic in which we discussed and decided upon these rules is located here.
1) Any version of Photoshop may be used, but both players must have the same version number (i.e. 6.0). Minor version changes (i.e. 6.01) are considered the same as the version it modified. Any filters and add-ons may be employed and both parties do NOT have to have the same filters.
2) The challenger and the challenged decide on the terms. Default terms are 10 rounds (5 per player). Challenger going first. Starting Canvas Size: 500 x 500 pixels. Time limit per round of 24 hours (see below).
3) A Layer is defined as a Single Layer as defined in Photoshop. Any manner of fills, strokes, images, fonts and misc. debris may be contained in this single layer. The designer working on the file is not constrained to a single layer as he/she is working, but the submitted round must be a single layer. All layers are additive, meaning that the final document will have 10 layers (or however many layers are previously agreed upon). All fonts must first be rasterized before emailing this happens when you combine layers anyway.
4) Each new layer must incorporate at least one recognizable element or part of the previous layer in it. This could be a little as a slice used for a background, a reduced image of the entire layer (players are not allowed to alter previous layers. when beginning your return - please start with a new blank layer or a duplicate of the previous one.) as a picture on a wall, or a face from the previous layer pasted on a new body. Although only one layer is being added, whatever the server wants can be done to layers underneath (move elements, blur, hue/saturation, polar coordinates, whatever).
5) Time limit per round: Each player has 24 hours to submit their layer from when the previous layer was submitted. Failure to do so results in a forfeit. The time limit may be modified by consent of both parties and extensions may be given if agreed upon. Optional version: Speed Photoshop Tennis: Each player has 1/2 (or 1) hour to submit their new layer. (Caution, not for the faint of heart).
6) Designers should not use copyrighted images in their works.
7) Optional Match Addition: Themes. Both parties may agree that the match is based on a single theme or as a theme vs. theme (TvT). For single theme versions, all new submissions must relate to or incorporate a theme. Example 1: Theme = Moon; All layers will have a moon or something mooney about them. Example 2: Theme = Oceanic; all submissions must somehow be sea related. For theme vs. theme versions, each party will pick a theme and each of their layers must relate to it as above. The themes should have something in common. Example 3: TvT = Mac vs. PC; Each of the Mac players will incorporate a Mac feel or image, while a the PC player will do the same with PCs (warning: this particular match can get violent!)
8) Both parties when finishing a round must return the altered image as an image and a link to either a .psd or a .zip file including the .psd
9) For the sake of transferred file size the participants are allowed to remove old layers from the psd file. At a minimum there should be two layers in each volley. All previous layers flattened into one layer and the new layer you have added. If anybody is interested in a collection of all layers in one file it would then be possible to assemble them from the individual files loaded.
