Trying to find out what kind of CMS a site is using...

Hello everyone,

Ok, all I know is that this site is updated via Xstandard lite. I had to download the plugin for me to be able to edit from my Powerbook. I have no problem updating info on the site such as images and text. But that is ALL Xstandard lite allows me to do. I finally got the info I needed to ftp to the site. And I found nothing to help me figure out what kind of CMS is it. Nothing with any WP, Drupal, Joomla, TYP03, or anyting else... Just Xstandard lite. Is there such a thing as a browser based CMS??? I was able to completely back up the site. But I still don't have a clue as to how to begin to change the layout of the site.

I've looked at a friend's ministry page via ftp, and I found wordpress stuff. And my local host Drupal install makes sense to me, even though I'm not familiar with using it. But this site MAKES no sense whatsover in the way it is put together! No one at my location seems to know anything. And the guy who supposedly designed the site moved to Switzerland!

Unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge to make a fresh start with another CMS....But my books are on the way. :-)

Is there a directory or something that I can find out what the CMS is???? Or any advice on changing the layout of the "mystery CMS"

Thanks,
Shane

Mambo or Joomla

Looks like it's either Mambo or Joomla, if it's a CMS. Both can make use of this plug in (they are different branches of the same CMS). I just did a google search for the plug in, and most of the top sites either had Mambo or Joomla, or were part of Xstandard lite's website.

CMS detective

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the info. I downloaded Mambo, Joomla, Wordpress, and Typo3 out of curiosity to see what all files and folders they have......And how they compare to what I've got. And nothing looks remotely similar to anything. I've even opened up php files with Text Wrangler to see if anything sheds light. I'm guessing it's some offbeat CMS. It's nice being able to update info via Xstandard lite. But I'm thinking that I have to totally switch over to another CMS in order to change the layout. UNLESS, I could get handy with CSS. I sure wish it could switch themes like my local Drupal install! I'm still waiting to hear from the person who actually "built" the site. So hopefully he can shed light on it.

Of course, I wish I had the powers of Rob Feature and MF. Then I'd be able to wipe out the site, build it from scratch, and get it running in a day with a new look and feel! But I have more books to read and a LOT of practice before I can do that.

Thanks again,
Shane

If you're not so handy with

If you're not so handy with css i would definitely go with wordpress. It's by far the most popular, therefore it has the most templates available to choose from that are generally fairly easy to manipulate even with limited css knowledge.

Thanks

A decent CMS detection tool

http://guess.scritch.org is a rather decent web detection tool - it uses a sort of fingerprinting to determine the type of CMS, Webserver, language and so on.
