Jason,
I'm pretty sure Matt talked in some detail about moving their church from Exchange to Gmail on Episode 74: The Virtual Office. There was also a fair amount of discussion in the comments, I see. Maybe that will answer some of your questions.

After having switched my personal domain e-mail over to GMain several months ago. I have been very impressed with the Google Apps eco-system.
For many years (well before I started working here), my church has been using Exchange Server (roughly 40-50 users) and in recent years we've found it a bit tedious to maintain. None of our IT volunteers have Exchange training/experience, and the two IT people on staff (myself included) do not have any training/experience either.
Exchange is such a heavy complicated beast and it worries me a bit that one misstep might blowup the whole thing... we've already had a few problems over the last few years.
Has anyone on here gone through a conversion from Exchange to Google? If so, how did it go? Were you satisfied? Do you miss any of exchanges functionalities? (As a note, we use the following Exchange functionalities: e-mail, distribution lists, contacts, calender sharing)
PS: Sure we could pay for off-site exchange hosting, but why pay for something when you can get it for free?
