I'd recommend Using Drupal. It's pretty good as a "Beginners Manual." I'm sure you can find an ebook edition somewhere, it's also on Safari Online if you have access to that.
As far as documentation goes, I found the Getting Started handbook on Drupal.org to be extremely helpful and well organized... and it just got reorganized at Drupalcon DC in the beginning of March, so try it out again!

Check out some of the tutorials at Top Notch Themes.
These folks design some pretty robust themes in terms of settings. I've sent several clients to them for out-of-the-box themes and their user user manual pdf's are helpful to those new to the Drupal community. I hope it helps.

I don't think there is a step by step tutorial to create a site. That might be good but it will be hard. what kind of site do you want? what features are you looking for? what do you want it to look like? there are a lot of factors that make site building hard to make into a tutorial.
Hi,
I've been using Joomla for more than a year, then I came to a point that I needed a more powerful CMS that has multiple levels of access, roles and permissions.
from what I have read, Drupal seems to be the answer, so far I Installed the Software but I can'r put my hands on it.
Can someone help with posting a step by step tutorial or a documentation articles that can help Drupal beginers like me since the drupal.org website is not weel organised in terms of explaining the software.
Thanks
I
