Here is my attempt at an openid explanation.
First, you need an openid provider. This can be someone like myopenid.com or any number of other providers.
Second, when you see the little openid symbol like on our login forms or on user pages you can login or add you openid account. When you are prompted for your openid you give them the url for your id.
The way openid works is that you enter your url/id on a site (like this one). The site sends it's information and your id to your provider. You log in with your provider and can authorize the site you came from. Then your openid provider sends information back to the site and you are routed back there.
Does that make sense?
That means there can be lots of ways to sign into your openid account based on how your provider is setup.
Does anyone have experience with wordpress.com as an openid provider?
I found a nice explanation about OpenID at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcmY8Pk-qEk
and a nice screen cast about how to use OpenID at http://simonwillison.net/2006/openid-screencast/
Hopefully, you find these links useful.
Thanks for the links with the explanations. I've added my Wordpress OpenID, Wordpress has info at http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/03/06/what-is-openid/. However, nothing happens if I try to login with the ID here.
I've heard a lot of talk about OpenID and I've noticed that you can use it here. However, an explanation and what one needs to do would be really good. I've found things often when it is explained it is very general or overly detailed, making things quite confusing as to the actual steps that one needs. For example I tried adding a wordpress url to my account and when I when I was directed to Wordpress I had to choose from several options, which one do I choose and what's the difference? I selected one and nothing much happened when I typed in the url in the OpenID login, so I think I missed something.
