H.264 AVI to MPEG

This probably isn't the best place to post this, but I'm not sure where else to, so here goes.

A client of mine has sixteen H.264-encoded videos in AVI containers that he wants placing on a webpage. I've already tried hosting them on YouTube and he's not satisfied with the quality, even on high-quality playback. I've decided to try using a Flash-based player (JW Player, I think) to play back the files and just host them myself. The problem is that Flash doesn't seem to play nice with AVI, and I don't know the best way to convert the videos. Obviously, I'd like to lose as little quality as possible; a lossless conversion would be best (although I'm not sure if that's possible or not).

I've tried ffmpeg and for some reason, it throws up its hands in despair over these particular files; mencoder will process the files, but I don't really know how to control it and all my results so far have either looked inferior or have had far larger file sizes. I did try "-vcodec copy"; it kinda worked, but it added some artifacts to the video

I'm not so worried about the audio; as long as it's there and doesn't sound obviously terrible, it should be OK. The sound is insignificant in most of the videos, although there are a few (maybe only two) that have narration.

An example file can be found here: http://www.mediafire.com/?zrgckyiuvn5.

Thanks guys.

Video Conversion Software

Check out www.avs4you.com and get their video converter. I downloaded your file and it converted your 3MB AVI file to a 6MB MPEG-2 file in less than a minute (actually, the FIRST time I did it, I wasn't paying attention, and it defaulted to "HD Video 1080p - (MPEG2, 15000kbps, 1920 x 1080, 29.97fps)" which was about 25MB and took about 2 minutes).

They have a great deal for a bundle of software for $59. I did it a few weeks ago, and I've liked everything I've used: audio converter, video converter, DVD authoring, and more.
