Privacy in Church email newsletters

I was listening to the G&G eNewsletters podcast and they were talking about how bad it is when the Church sends emails/newsletters to its members using the default 'To' field, instead of the more appropriate 'BCC' field.

As this is an issue in our Church, I contacted the pastor about it. His reply was:

Most of the Church [members] email one another anyway, so I don't see it as a problem, unless people don't want to communicate to one another. That is not a good thing for fellow believers who will spend eternity together.

He did, however, agree to ask people if they wanted their address protected and, if so, would make note of it.

I'd just like to hear what others think of this... What would your response be if your pastor said this? Are there any legal issues involved?
How should I respond?

bcc is far more appropriate for broadcast emails. although this also runs the risk of getting caught in spam filters.

for auto-generated emails by our website, i have the code auto generate unique emails to each individual so they are the only one in the TO field.

1. I agree. It is better to loop through and send each email individually. I am pretty sure that apps like phplist and Drupal's Simple News module do this.
2. Another reason not mentioned on the podcast for not using the To: field is that folks have to scroll through all of those email addys to get to the meat of the message. Really annoying on my iPhone for instance.
