Hardest part of managing a church website?

This area of the message board hasn't seen a new post in awhile, so I thought I would pose a question that came up today. What is the hardest part of managing a church's website?

For us, we see a lot of challenges in managing church websites. Getting podcasts up in a timely manner, updating images, and content for the upcoming week. Looking over SEO strategies, changing keywords, and managing paid search campaigns. What are some of the things you wish were easier? Things you love doing?

Personally, for me, I enjoy working with Pastors to help share their vision with their community. I enjoy working in a creative environment and helping serve pastors.

So what do you love/hate about managing your church's/clients websites?

Couldn't agree with you more! I have been back and forth so much this month about event calenders. Still trying to decide how I feel about some of the solutions available to pastors.

Keeping the content updated

Even with a CMS site we still have issues trying to keep our website updated. And we have a very age diverse membership so getting people on the website is also a hurtle. One new thing we are trying is simply getting a lot of our event sign ups online to push people out to the web.

support from leaders

my beef - i tried really hard to make it easy for ministry leaders to "upkeep" the info on their respective pages. this way, i can move on to other projects for development and let them maintain current info on the web. let's just say, that didn't work out as i planned. instead, i still get stuck with updating their info.

what i like - about every month there is someone new that comes to the church because of the website. that alone is worth the effort. i am in His will, who cares about silly updating of content.

People

As JDA503 and tb mentioned, it's the people. It is more time consuming and trying to help them become an active, interested, productive and excited participant in the project than actually putting the site together. It is also the most rewarding and effective part of the job.

Involvement, updates

Regular content updates and driving traffic. Especially if your pastors vary on the role of the site. Is it mostly static for information to visitors? Or is it a place for ongoing community?

It's also been a challenge to train our small staff on how to update the site regularly and continue to provide updated and relevant content.

That, and event calendars. ;-)
