Hosting Recommendations

Hello,

I'm on a search for a reseller hosting plan. I'm not particularly interested in the "making money" aspect of reseller hosting. What I need is a way to economically and conveniently host my own clients. In order to provide them with control of their own email and, for the more adventurous ones, a few other controls (e.g. creating their own blog), a reseller setup seems to be the best option.

Ideally, I'd like one service that would be able to accomodate the varied needs of all my clients - some of whom are Christian ministries; others are small businesses, or (hopefully) political candidates. It's much easier for me (and therefore more economical for my clients) if I don't have to figure out half a dozen different control panels, support systems, terms of service, and various "quirks" in the system.

The number one requirement is reliability (i.e. uptime). Minimum of 99.9% uptime guarantee. Hosts offering higher guarantees will be viewed very favorably.

Number two is fast, knowledgeable, 24/7/365 tech support - preferrably via phone, chat, and email/support ticket.

Additional needs are:
FAST servers
Unlimited Domains & Subdomains
Unlimited Emails (or at least very generous number of them)
Multiple MySQL databases with PHPAdmin
Disk space and bandwidth are currently less than 1GB (hoping that will go up)
PHP4 and PHP5 (I'd like to be able to choose the best option for each client)
HSphere or CPanel (widely used control panel, no "custom" panels)
Fantastico Scripts (including WordPress, Joomla, phpBB, Coppermine Gallery)
Dedicated IPs available for each client (either included or at minimal additional cost)
Streaming for audio/video
Timely backups (prefer daily)
.htaccess
Some of my clients will want to use subscription mailing lists (not spam, just reaching their supporters).
Some need ecommerce (small stores)
Long-term stability (I'd like to find a host that I can stay with for several years.)
Standard setup on a Linux/Unix server (no "odd" configurations)
Economical plan (not more than $20-25/month, if possible)

I do not need:
Domains - free or otherwise (Domains are purchased from a separate registrar.)

I would prefer to do business with a company owned and operated by committed believers.

Can anyone recommend a company that meets these requirements? Please post here, or you're welcome to PM me. I need to make a decision within the next few days.

Questions, suggestions, or other comments are welcome, too.

Blessings and thanks,

I've posted a similar thread about a week ago. While I wasn't looking directly for recommendations, I've done my research and the closest ones I've found are lunarpages.com and hostgator.com

I'd be interested in responses as I still need to decide on a plan myself.

Thanks for the replies.

Hostgator is attractive. However, I've seen some information about spam coming out of their servers so bad that Yahoo filters ALL Hostgator mails into the spam box. Anyone know anything about that? Reliable emails (delivered to the inbox, not the spam box) are essential for my clients.

I'm looking into this....but I don't think it is just HG. I use an ESP for my newsletters and many of my yahoo customers are bounce backs. I've went thru the process of filling out some form and getting on yahoo's whitelist, so we will see what happens with the next blast!

Thanks Paul and Kita.

Thanks Paul and Kita. Getting whitelisted with Yahoo is nice ... but I wouldn't want to have to do that for each domain. IF they are being filtered, it makes me wonder, too, how many other mail services might also filter them. It could be a never-ending battle trying to get whitelisted with dozens (hundreds?) of mail services.

Does anyone have experience with logicweb.com?

It didn't come up in my original search! But I think its worth looking into! I'd be interested in hearing about others experience with this too....especially the reseller package.

Off to google I go!

I just spent about 15 minutes on the phone with the owner of LogicWeb. I told him about this discussion so he may drop by CWM /thumbsupsmileyanim.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumbsani:" border="0" alt="thumbsupsmileyanim.gif" />

I had a few questions and all where affirmatively answered. I think I'm going to give them a try. And $10 with a 30/day money back guarantee...I can put up a new site and test the waters without much to lose.

They offer domain reselling as a separate package....which is kind of a bummer that it's not all in one...but not enough to be a deal breaker for me! /specool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":specool:" border="0" alt="specool.gif" />

You won't get any guarantee worth it's salt. There are so many things that can go wrong on the internet that can affect the apparent uptime of a server - if my router in my house goes down and I can't see my website hosted with you, is that my problem or yours? What about if the router problem is at my ISP? Or on a transatlantic cable? They can all happen, and potentially I can claim against your guarantee - after all, my site isn't available to me.

On the bright side - look for a host who provides access to their uptime statistics. We resell hosting to clients; we don't provide guarantees on uptime, but we *do* provide access to our server uptime stats (at http://www.kpdirection.com/serverstatus.php). Being honest about the availability of the servers means more to our customers than any guarantees that we might offer.

Pete.

I have been using

I have been using Ourinternet.US since 2003 to host my sites. I have a resellers account with them. I use it mostly to host three main sites I have. They have just about everything you are asking for. As last poster said, uptime is relative, many factors come into play. Ourinternet.US is commited to keeping their servers up as much as possible. My main site is eccomerce enabled so I need a service that keeps me up and running as much as possible.

1.) They have pretty good uptime. Every so often my site goes down
(about once every six months, maybe longer, which is not bad).
2.) Support is via email. They respond on a timely basis.
3.) They use HSphere Control Panel system, which is very flexible.
4.) Each customer has access to their own CP.
5.) You will have control over just about every aspect of your account.
6.) They use Easy Apps, which has 31+ apps that install with a mouse click
(You have to turn this feature on in th CP in order to provide it for customers)
7.) Have several plans to choose from. They are very flexible with what they offer.
8.) They constantly grow bigger and better.
9.) Email used to be sluggish, but is much better now. (Side note:Gmail has spoiled me)
10.) They are not Faith Based (Only downside I can see).

Overall I am satisfied or I would not have stayed as long as I have.
Check them out.
God bless.

Pete,

Thanks for the information. What you said about looking for a host that provides honest (third-party) information about their uptime makes a LOT of sense.

Hyperspin provides some very helpful data in that regard. UnitedHosting looks to be the run-away leader. However, they use the Ensim/Parallels control panel and it looks very similar to one of the hosts I'm looking to get away from because it doesn't provide the control (or features) I need. They're also a little higher than my preferred budget, but still a possibility. I know ... you get what you pay for.

Dean,

Welcome to CWM! /welcome.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<<w" border="0" alt="welcome.gif" />

I'll check Ourinternet.us out. Thanks for the recommendation.

One of my concerns as far as ownership is that some of my clients are Christian ministries and there is some non-Christian opposition.

Hostgator seems to have everything I'm looking for. I guess I'm a bit gun-shy. I've been with some other companies that got to the top by offering super (almost unbelievable) deals. It was great for awhile, then they either lost their focus (more interested in making money than providing the service they promised) or couldn't keep up with demand, and things went downhill. But I see Hostgator listed as an "honest host" at WHReviews, so they must be doing something right.

Still researching ... still praying ...

Blessings and thanks,
