I was thinking it would be helpful to come up with a list to publicize both local and online events, just to get the word out. Of course, there's the local media: newspaper/radio/tv. Also:

Examiner.com/About.com (Contact one of their local writers for a story idea)

Free Press Release sites (careful—some of these will sell your email address to spammers)
