The only good thing that may come out of that battle is that maybe $600 Photoshop will come down to a reasonable price.
Microsoft has tried for years without a lot of success to enter that market. Now is a little better time since a Mac is not a requirement any more. Still I doubt if Microsoft will have much luck in that market. People that do design work have never been friendly towards Microsoft and are somewhat snobbish on what programs they use. Also until they can make inroads with getting the print shops to accept documents in MS's raw format it is going to be tough going. Of course, the same thing was said a few years back when Indesign came out. No way it could beat out Quark but it surely has.
mairving,
I agree in the past MS has not been able to really break through the "Photoshop" barrier.
However, I think they have some things going for them now. The "Mac" problem is not as big as it once was thanks to PC's really coming up to doing some awesome graphics these days.
Then there is the "bridging" of their technologies to work together seemlessly "in theory". They way that actually works will be a make or break for MS, IMHO.
The big advantage MS has over Adobe is the fact they "control" 95%+ of the OS market. That should, again in theory, make it easier/better for their products to work w/their OS.
I do hope neither side really "clobbers" the other as some good, long competition is good for all of us developers and designers. /thumbsupsmiley.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="thumbsupsmiley.png" />
Apple is stuck with a limited market, Sun is toat and Linux is basicly religated to server duty, so what's next for MS?
Well Adobe is coming out w/Apollo but it looks like MS is not taking thing lying down.
Get ready for Expression Studio:

This, IMHO, is a direct shot at Adobe's new direction.
If these things work like they should, then designers and developers will be making some pretty durn sweet MS based sites/programs.
It's about to get VERY interesting out in development/design land.
