Best Timecard / Project Tracking / Accounting Software

I'm setting up as a freelancer and I was wondering if anyone knows of some good free/open source packages to help manage things like timecards / billing / invoices / projects / clients etc.

Or is it better to invest some money in this kind of thing? ... in which case which one should I look at?

Does anyone have any first hand experience of this kind of software?

Thanks.

I don't know about FREE, but

I don't know about FREE, but Microsoft Word has some nice Billing, Invoice templates.

As for as timeliness and projects are concerned, at work we use MS Excel. If you take the time to learn the software, it's pretty powerful.

I think people don't give the office package enough credit...

You can always take a look at

You can always take a look at http://sourceforge.net and http://freshmeat.net. You might find something on http://hotscripts.com, but there are commercial packages (paid) on Hotscripts, as well as Freshmeat. Sourceforge, I believe, are all free. You'd want to search for ERP or CRM to get the results you are looking for. You'd have to test what is there to see if it's to your liking.

Hi,For project time tracking,

Hi,

For project time tracking, task management, on-line client-developer communication we use Project Pier. It's open source on-line project management app: http://www.projectpier.org/

I've been doing some digging myself and found out that M$ actually have a free accountancy package... it looks like it does what i need it to for accountancy ... although I havn't tried it yet...

It still leaves me with a need for project management software.. so hopefully some of the suggestions will come up with a winner.

Thanks again.

Go the whole hog with MS

Go the whole hog with MS Project! We have it but never really used it for anything other than Gantt charts - but it might be a lot better than I realised(?)
