Building a website for a first-timer

Hi Guys,

Wonderining if you could help. Have a friend who wants to build a site for the first time.

They want to know:

1) Where they can get the best free webspace (ie lack of pop-ups)
2) Which design tool to use

Now I myself have my own domain and use Dreamweaver/code myself to create my website, but he is a beginner and has no money to spend. So can someone please let me know any good freeware design tools and the best free webspace around that they know of?

Many Thanks

Chris

Hmmm. I don't know of a place that gives you free hosting without banners or popups, execpt maybe the free accounts from hostrocket.com.

Since you have your own domain, what you could do is set up a diretory on your webspace for his site. Then just register a domain for a year at smallbusiness.yahoo.com (I believe you can still do this for only $2.99) and have that domain point to his set up directory.

www.hostdepartment.com has free accounts, though with not that much webspace. If he wants just a simple site, he can use Nvu (search Google, I forgot the url) - I just downloaded it, and it's super-simple...and the GIMP is a free graphics program (www.gimp.org) - awesome program. And try searching google for free web builders, there are tons. Though some are pretty lame..

Is it a personal site or for an organization? If it's a personal site, has he checked with his internet provider to see if they provide any space? Nvu is a good program to learn web design.

If he's just looking for a low cost, you can get webspace for around $5 a month. That would have no ads, and have a lot more flexibility than any that just had to be free.

And you could also download a free website template from the internet, there are high quality website templates out there. Then you could adapt your template in Dreamweaver. I would recomend you Dreamweaver as being the best, i use it since a lot of years.

Best regards!
