Looking for a CMS

Of all of the CMSs out there, it is hard to pick the right one, so I am taking open suggestions.

Here's my criteria:

- It's gotta look nice, or have an easily changable skin
- It's gotta be quick and efficient
- It's gotta be easily customizable (custom modules, blocks, etc.)....nothing like Mambo's component system
- It's gotta have a decent user base (so I can get some help if needed)
- It can't be either PHPNuke, Geeklog, or Mambo (since I have tried them)
- It /should/ be under the GPL

Thanks!

I'd suggest you give either

I'd suggest you give either Xoops or phpWebSite a look.

OpenSoureCMS is a good place to look over the "out of the box" installations of a long list of CMS scripts.

One thing you've got to consider when looking at any of them. If you have to use third party modules to get the functionality you desire you may have problems when the CMS updates. A newer version of the CMS might add additional functionality, fix some bugs, or correct security issues. It can take a period of time before a module is updated to function with an updated CMS. In other words, you may be stuck with an outdated CMS (and if the update was due to security problems, that isn't a good situation to be in). Or, if you do update, you won't be able to maintain the functionality of your site until the module is finally updated as well. (Did I explain that very well? I'm not sure I did. /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> )

Anyway, hope this helps a little.

justme, that's some good

justme, that's some good insight regarding updates. I've got stuck a couple of times because of that with PHPNuke and Xoops.

Have you looked at blogging software? Not necessarily CMS, but something like Movable Type may serve your needs.

If you're looking into

If you're looking into blogging scripts make sure Wordpress is on your list to examine. Lots of skins are available to satisfy just about any taste, along with a bunch of plugins. (Of course you can find more skins and plugins at other locations, too. These links just give a nice assortment.)

Also, for those who may not have noticed, at OpenSourceCMS you'll also find a group of blogging scripts that you can check out . . . just look down the left column menu.

I am/was also looking for a CMS and found Mambo:
http://www.mamboserver.com/

I haven't set it up yet, but it looks like it has all of the features I need and more /wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I love the way that Mambo looks, but when programming your custom components, it gets confusing /sleep.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="-_-" border="0" alt="sleep.gif" />

Well, I haven't really got

Well, I haven't really got into working with it yet...but like you said, it looks really nice. It seems to have lots of modules available and I think that it will become easier to use as it continues to grow.

My only complaint about mambo

My only complaint about mambo is that there is no bone-head simple intro guide, and simple upgrades are not a priority. Once you spend a little time working with it, it makes total sense. I've been coding a component for the last few weeks, ChordBase.
