well.
I'm getting a sweet deal for 4.95/Mo, no registration fees, unlimmited DT, unlim disk space. Also supports php & MySQL. The problem is I got it under a price freeze. I'm using http://www.hostonce.com as my host. Their servers are pretty quick. They're now charging 6.95/mo for 25G DT & 500M disk space.
you also get the php and MySQL. also has frontpage 2002 extensions, unlimmited emails & forwarded (pop boxes), password protected directories, custom 404 pages, Server Side Includes, 2 free subdomains ($5 for each after), supports .asp, asp.net, perl, C#, J#, and ODBC
lots of good stuff in there.
another cool thing about it, is that part of the money goes toward charity since they do not charge for set-up fees. I forgot to mention that they pay for your domain as long as your a customer....so you can ditch the $35/yr from most places just to have your domain.
I hope this helps,
Before you go with any "unlimited bandwidth" or "unlimited disk space" hosts be sure to read this information: http://unlimband.com/
I know that ArkWebs (one of our members here) runs a webhost company and I personally know several of his customers that are VERY happy with his service. He is also a Christian who supports many ministries, but I'm not sure if there is a formal relationship between him and the ministries he supports. www.arkwebs.net
Personally, I use best1hosting.com. Small, one-man show, but very nice. Isn't the cheapest around (I think I'm paying like $200/year or something like that). The thing I love the most about it: you can pick up the phone and call Tim (the owner). He's very communicative. Makes working with him easy for the few thimes that there are troubles. www.best1hosting.com
God bless,
Luke
Take a look at http://www.digistylers.com
I'm with them and they have been very reliable so far and they are very good value for money.
The top package offers 6GB but you can have more than that if you wish
Patrick
Crystaltech is also offering quality hosting with reasonable rates you can check it at http://www.crystaltech.com/compare.htm
WOW! I got a lot of input very fast. I'm surprised I never knew about this site until yesterday.
The site I have is called PH@TT. (Praising Him All The Time) It's been around since 1996, but for the last two years it has been idle. No, it's not named after PHAT Chance, the group. In fact they took the acronym for themselves without even asking. But it's OK, I'm flattered.
The site promotes Christian artist, their music and the record labels. In addition I do web design/development and use the web site for allowing clients to preview the work.
Once PH@TT gets back to the traffic it once had there would be a lot of people listening to samples from the CDs. No more than 30 seconds a cut, and about 3 cuts are used to create the PH@TT Sampler. There also be music news and discussion boards on various topics given by the site, not the user.
I ended up signing with a company called Jumpline. It was cheaper than where I was, and offers a lot of features, with a few I have not seen anywhere else. View the site and the VDS500 plan and you'll see what I got.
I'm going month to month for now so I can determine if I want to stay there. If anyone else can offer me features that are close to theirs then I will consider them.
I need PHP, MySQL database and CGI/Perl.
Thanks for all you input guys/gals. It is very much appreciated.
Be blessed.

opsy! Next time I'll double check before I post a URL... sorry!
Owning my own web hosting business, I don't always trust those really cheap hosting companies. I mean I don't profit that much as it is and my prices are pretty low, so I can't understand how those really really cheap companies stay above water. I mean you never know if they're hosting out of their basement or something or if they'll even survive a few months. Its like, would you buy a new BMW for $3000?
I'm just saying watch out for those really low, really tempting deals, some are kinda sketchy.
Let me know if any of these features look good. I will personaly make sure you are happy with whatever plan you choose. The CWM user 'GM' is one of our happy customers.
hey guys, i found this one. Lypha.com seems to have quite a package. it just looks so nice and good. would you suppose this one is like buying the $3000 BMW? Cuz I wouldn't mind switching their for the 1 or 2 year plan that has 1000M 50G transfer.
Plus their uptime is 99.998% or something crazy like that. I've been having problems with my current host. They claim to have a 99.7% uptime....so, i went ahead and did the math...
there are 1440 minutes in a day >>> and with a 99.7% uptime, that means you have a 0.3% downtime....which means every 1000 minutes, your site will be down for 3 minutes.
so, each day with that percentage, we're looking at close to 4 1/2 minutes a day.
It just seems to me that it's my luck to find my site down everytime it happens.
----------------------------------------------
sorry, but i got off topic for a bit.
if anyone can review over the lypha offer and let me know what they think
I read a forum that was linked in this about Jumpline web hosting sevice. I just wanted to say that the time I have been with them has been problem free. I'm liking the features they provide and everything has been problem free.
Check them out - Jumpline
Blessings,
Picard
Hi Picard,
I'm going month to month for now so I can determine if I want to stay there. If anyone else can offer me features that are close to theirs then I will consider them.
I have just started as a reseller for web hosting, and have looked at the VDS500 Plan. If you do decide to change, then please contact me (I will PM you).
Thanks, /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I'm with HasWeb (two accounts) and have heard good things about HostRadius as well.
I know, which is why I was wondering about this type of thread where something specific is asked for.
For example, if someone makes a post asking for a referral to someone who does good design work, is it acceptable for someone to reply, "I do pretty good design work, here is a link to some of my works, and I work pretty cheap."
My question is, is that acceptable to do here?
Thanks!
Jon
Do you guys see any problems with this host? Spaceforhost.com (linux) (I'm still new at all of this so maybe I'm missing something.)
They also offer domain names for $7.50 when you purchase their hosting plan. We probably made a mistake going with their Windows package rather than Linux, but we got our domain name and the "startup" plan for only $15.50 for the year. They've been reliable.
Teresa /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
Edit: Just as a note in case anyone is considering using them - I don't think they allow chat rooms or video cams.
Hi,
I'm not sure if you have found a good hosting company, but our hosting company is awesome! You can find them at http://americannetlink.com
First off:
NEVER EVER EVER LET YOUR WEB HOST REGISTER YOUR DOMAIN WITH THEIR INFORMATION.
Sorry for the shouting. Let's just say that I have seen too many people have their domains held hostage that way.
The first domain I registered was done by the company I was using and it took months to get it away from them. I think they finally got tired of my e-mails and support requests.
Another company I registered through went from $10 per year to $20 without any notice.
Just use someplace like godaddy.com (or even the Wild West Domains reseller I have seen posting here, but cannot remember who it is). They may cost you an extra $0.90 - $2.00 more, but believe me that it is worth it in the long run.
The price does concern me.
I understand that money for ministries is tight. I host several ministries at low cost or even free just because of their needs and their service.
There are several things that go along with a low price:
1. Short lived companies - New / inexperienced hosts may charge very low prices trying to get a lot of clients and a big reputation, but they are unable to convert a lot of cheap clients into real money and soon close.
2. Instability - Hackers and script kiddies love cheap sites. If they get booted off of the server they are only out a few bucks. What they do on the server affects you.
3. Low Quality - You can get a $99 per month server from Rackshack and create your own hosting company overnight, but the server would be cheap, you may not be experienced enough to maintain it, and you will probably be getting really cheap bandwidth.
Now just imagine that is what your host has done. Server quality, management, and bandwidth are the heart of hosting, they should not be skimped on.
4. Dishonesty - One complaint about the "Unlimited" hosts is that they will cut you off if you use too much of their "unlimited" with your site. As a ministry, this may not be an issue.
5. Retention - How much are you worth to a host you have paid $15 per year for? In most businesses it is true that it is cheaper to keep clients than to get new ones. In hosting it is sometimes cheaper to get new clients coming in at low fees than it is to retain clients paying the low fees. After all, are you willing to go to court for $15? I didn't think so.
6. Short sighted business strategy - If you have an empty server then every $ you have coming in helps you pay for it. But after a while you realize that clients are like pets. It is hard to take care of a houseload of animals on a small paycheck. Server overages are now costing you more than your clients are paying and you must raise prices, lose clients, kill service, or shut off the server and disappear.
I managed a site for someone who hosted on a $30 per year account once. One day the site just disappeared. Through a little research I found that they had stopped paying rent on the server and the company that actually hosted it reformatted the hard drive and turned it off.
If you do not have a truly important site, can handle a bit of disappointment, keep up to date backups of all files and database info, and have very little money to spend then it should be fine to go with a cheap host.
I am not selling hosting so this is not a self promotion, but I would suggest using a host that is a part of this community. Someone who has invested him or her self into the community as a resource and not just as an advertiser. If I needed hosting I would go for someone with 50 good (recent) posts here and a good hosting business easily. I would avoid going for a host that popped in for one day and never returned after posting their advertisement.
Uh oh. Too late for us. /sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> (I wish I'd found C-W-M sooner.) But it appears that we could have it transferred to godaddy.com (without losing any of our registration time) so maybe that's the best thing for us to do now.
I had wondered about some of the other considerations you mentioned - unstable, short-lived, etc., but my co-worker checked with some local contacts who indicated that was not a problem. Time will tell.
By the way, I'm not promoting our host. I'm honestly trying to figure out if there is something we need to know so we can get out while the gettin's good (e.g. the possiblity of holding our domain name hostage and raising prices). And, if it's a good plan, just want to let others know about it. You've raised some very important considerations.
Teresa /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
If your name is set as the registrant and the administrator with your e-mail in there then you can get it back pretty easily.
Not everyone who registers domains is going to do something like that, but there are always a few who will. They will tell you that the domain was part of the hosting deal and you will need to continue hosting with them to keep the domain.
godaddy is a great lifeboat for domains. They transfer quickly and are very honest.
Bob Parsons, the owner of godaddy, was originally of Parsons Technology (The creator of QuickVerse Bible software before it went to Intuit, then Broderbund, then The Learning Company, then Mattel, then who knows now?)
That is a really well thought out post. I have a few things to add/perhaps disagree on.
Only thing I would say here is to make sure that you are the REGISTRANT. On the domains we register, a company contact will be listed as Technical and Admin.
The key here is to use a host that has a control panel that will allow you to manage your domain yourself. Everyone who registers a domain should be able to access their contact information and update it as necessary.
I do think there is an advantage to letting your host manage your domain. I had a point where I needed to move clients from one server to another, and the clients whose domains we had control over were extremely smooth with no downtime, whereas the other sites were susceptible to some downtime.
The only other comment I have is on price. I agree completely. There are literally thousands of web hsots out there, and I know how tough it is to compete with the 1-2 dollar per month hosting companies.
I do think you can find a good host in the $5 a month price range. (Amazingly, my starting price range, what a coincidence!) I would say that we only have contact with about 50% of our clients at all. Those that do usually require less than 15 minutes of hand holding before they get moving on their own.
One thing that you didn't mention that is an absolute MUST is to read the terms of service. This is where you will get hit on refunds, and what you can and cannot do with your site. The other thing, especially for my brothers and sisters in Christ, I think it vital that you ensure that there are no family-antagonistic, anti-christian sites allowed.
One thing you can do to do a quick check on how long a company has been in business is to look up ther domain name. This won't be 100% accurate of course, but if the domain has been registered for a couple of years, you know that you are not dealing with a fly-by-night company.
You are dead on. You have to be very careful these days in choosing a host. I spend a lot of time talking with other web hosts, and many many (>80%) do not have the first clue how to run a web server.
I could probably go on for hours on this topic, but I'll let it drop here.
Jon
That's a relief! My co-worker's name is listed as registrant and administrator, with our e-mail address.
I'm planning to register another domain or two soon, as well as looking for host space for another site, so all this is very helpful. What meets the need for my main site at the moment may not meet the needs for another client.
Teresa /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
I have worked with ministries long enough to know that something like server reliability is not as important to them as it is to a business.
I was in a discussion with someone else about this the other day. They said that in their business they value their time at $40 per hour, so if it costs them $20 per month more to get them a host that saves them one hour of trouble then they come out ahead.
You just have to factor in the cost to you of downtime or the inconvenience of moving to another host or losing all of your data. If you have a ministry site for reaching out to people who already know about you then you won't lose sales with an hour of downtime and your site is probably not a huge investment that would not be able to be moved elsewhere.
If it fits your needs then use it.
I do agree about the "family friendly" content issue. Although I would move away from social jargon and not refer to it as "family friendly" but as clean or unclean. Remember that your money helps keep that host in business. If that host permits "adult" content (again, why is something so immature refered to as mature?) then your money is supporting their work. You are helping to keep a porn site online.

Our new servers have only been up for just over two months. During that time we have had 100% uptime, with no crashes, no security breaches, and no slow times. We plan to keep that high standard, and aim for a 99.9% or higher uptime average at all times. We do offer a 30 day money back guarantee, so that should show you the confidence we have in our servers. And we run our business with Christian ethics and integrity.
I'll not post about specific packages and prices and such, but since the thread is here, I'll just throw our URL up.
Take a look, kick the tires, etc. We've been in business over two years, so you know we aren't going anywhere, and our prices are about as low as one should reasonalby expect them to be.
If you have any questions, please ask!

Jon,
Thanks for the whois.sc link. That is very interesting.
Question: What is an appropriate number of sites to be hosted at one server address? What happens if there are too many sites?
Teresa /smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />
alrighty...
just so our boy john doesn't get left out...(since everyone else has put up theirs)
Luke and I are using John's webhost:
ChristianDesigns.org
Number of sites is not really too important. It takes a little more work for the server software to look through 1000 domains than 50, but not a whole lot.
What does make a difference is the amount of load a server is running with under normal circumstances.
My server is a dual PIII 1400MHz with 1gig of RAM and currently runnint with a server load average of .45 over the last 5 minutes.
If just one site sticks a bad script on there or does a heavy mailing then the server will slow down. I killed the server myself once with a messed up script that took down all resources in under 2 minutes.
I know of servers that run over 900 domains and still do them well.
Hi all:
Your discussion regarding hosting on servers with adult content has been re-introduced here:
http://www.christian-web-masters.com/forum...?showtopic=1113
It is a little choppy due to the move on only some posts, but it is still worth continuing the discussion.
Blessings,
Sean
i must have not seen this quote:
yep, i've got first hand experience with that at hostonce.com
the whole free-domain thing got me...heh...that was like two years ago...and i've learned since.
it became impossible to do a domain transfer.
A good web host is hard to find now days. I remember when I first started off in the web hosting business. You know what started my problems? It was knowing little about web hosting in the first place.
Customer Service is 90% of the business. If you can handle customers, and communicate with them, you are one step further ahead of everyone else. The other 10% would be uptime. If my server goes down I want to know about it first. Customers want to know what's going on, and when they are not informed, guess what happens? They leave, that's all there is to it.
If anyone is thinking about hosting a web server; whether it be a web hosting business, design business, or a game server, I would recommend co-locating or leasing a dedicated server from a respectable company. My opinion would be - ATJEU, or NAC. /thumbsupsmiley.png" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="thumbsupsmiley.png" />

Hi
I have been put in a prediciment too with Hostonce.com.au, I thought they would be a good local company with integrity and honour. Yeh sure!
After months of emails with little reply to try and get my clients domain away from them, the only way I could was to let the domain expire and then reregister it. Fortunately this was not an issue at the time but it would be now. But now I do my own reseller hosting with Myacen.com who do a marvelous job. Check em out! Tell 'em Texhead sent you!
I do most of my hosting to local businesses so I give them good support and they appreciate it.
I must say I have a number of my clients domains registered under my account with their details as the registrant though.
Cheers
Tony
Here's a great site with about 100 Chrstian Hosts:
http://www.angelichosts.com/
/welcome.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<<w" border="0" alt="welcome.gif" /> Hi Felix,
You are right that one should be very cautious of those web hosting companies that give pretty sketchy information. A good rule of thumb is: if a deal sounds to good to be true it usually is.
On the reverse side of the coin, though, are many reputable hosts that offer good deals. (This is not a paid endorsement /biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> ) For Christian web hosting...their is non better than ArkWebs. I don't care if David works out of a basement,or,the Sears Tower, location doesn't mean a good web host.
I would recommend ArkWebs to anybody. It's not the size of the operation that matters to me,but, the quality of service.
God Bless You,
David Davis
I can't agree with you more David.. I'm with Arkwebs too and David Campbell runs an excellent host. My site is almost never down.. Once is all i can remember. He's been a huge asset to my site. He's done a lot of work for my site that he did purely out of the goodness of his heart. I'd also recommend Arkwebs to anyone. Great host!!
Scott
My hosting company is getting way to expensive. I need a host that supports PHP, runs on Linux, and provides MySQL. My site will have traffic using MP3, so I need a good amount of transfer alotment.
I've seen some hosting sites, but would like to get some info from people who are using them.
Thanks for your help.
