Hello "PersonA",

Thank you for writing to AT&T Yahoo! Web Hosting.

I welcome the opportunity to assist you in your concern regarding domain transfer.

I understand from your mail that you would like to transfer your domain to another person and also you are concerned about authorization key.

Let me answer your query one by one:

Issue:-1

"PersonA", when you sign up for a Yahoo! Small Business Services account, if you are logged in with an existing Yahoo! ID, the Small Business services account will be associated with that specific Yahoo! ID.

Currently, we do not have a feature that would allow you to associate your account to another Yahoo! ID directly.

The transfer is possible only if you cancel your Yahoo! Small Business Services account, you can then request that we release the domain name from our reseller account with the domains registrar.

Please make sure to do the following prior to cancelling your Yahoo! Small Business Service:

- Back up any web site data/files or email associated with your current Yahoo! Small Business Services Account, as this data will be lost when you cancel

If you wish to proceed with the transfer process, please reply to this email after you have cancelled your Small Business Services Account.

In your reply, please include the following information:

- The Domain Name
- Your Yahoo! ID
- The email address you wish to have associated with the domain as an Administrative Contact address. This email address cannot contain the domain name being transferred.

This will enable us to release your domain name from the Yahoo! Small Business Services Reseller Account so that you can continue with the transfer process.

Please note: Once your domain has been released form the Yahoo! Reseller Account, you will be directly responsible for the managing and renewal of the domain registration with our domains registrar, Melbourne IT.

If you did not register your domain through Yahoo!, or transferred your domain to Yahoo! Small Business Services, you do not need to request that your domain be released from our reseller account.

Addign further if you are concerned about authorization code here are the details:

An authorization code is a key code only applicable for .us, .biz, .info and just recently .org domain names.

If you are transferring your domain registration to another registrar (away from Yahoo!) and your new registrar asks for an authorization code, Yahoo! cannot provide this code to you. In order to retrieve
your code, we will need to release your domain name to our partner registrar,
Melbourne IT. Please do the following:

1. To prevent future billing, please cancel your WebHosting service.
Please note, that moving your domain registration away from Yahoo! does not automatically cancel your account.

Please Note - Update the Administrative contact email address listed on the "WHOIS" Database before you cancel the account as this is address on which you will receive your Registry Key. You can make this change
through your Domains Control Panel by clicking on "Registration Info."

Once we verify you are the owner, we will proceed with the release of the domain name.

Once released you can contact Melbourne IT to retrieve your code at:

http://www.melbourneit.com.au/

I hope information given by me would help you in resolving your issue.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

Have a nice day!

Regards,

******

For privacy reasons, I called the person who has the domain at Yahoo - "PersonA". This person has two domains registered with Yahoo though, so I see no big deal for Yahoo to "allow" the transfer ??

Maybe I should contact Enom also ??

Have contacted Enom and Melbourne IT. Has anyone some suggestions please ? Yahoo seem to be making a simple thing very difficult. Should ICANN be involved ? What are Yahoo's obligations, as Registrar ?

I just transferred a domain

I just transferred a domain from Yahoo! about 2 weeks ago. While they didn't make it difficult, they definitely took their time with it. While most registrars release almost instantly, it took over 3 business days for Yahoo! to give it up to me.

It doesn't look to me like Yahoo! is making the domain name transfer difficult, rather like you are mis-understanding the process. When you want to transfer a domain from a registrar, there is no need to contact them at all. You take the following steps:

1) Ensure the domain is not in 'locked' status at the current registarar
2) Set up and account at a new registrar
3) Initiate the transfer at the new registrar
4) Check the email address listed as the primary responsible individual for the domain name at the current registrar--you should have an email awaiting you that has the codes you need in it
5) Enter those codes at the new registrar
6) Wait

From the looks of your quoted email it appears that you are trying to transfer your entire Yahoo! small business account to another Yahoo! user ID which they are saying is not possible. This is no matter as it is totally un-necessary.

After you have completed the 6 steps above and the transfer has completed, if you no longer need your Yahoo! small business account you can log into it and cancel services.

Like I said, I just went through this 2 weeks ago--the only tough part was waiting for Yahoo!

Yes, I realise the transfer is always initiated from the 'requesting' Registrar, that is the first thing I attempted. I logged into Enom and went to initiate the transfer from there, as I have transferred other domains in the past. The process wanted an authorisation key, which I don't have, as I'm not the owner of the domain. The owner of the domain is not too 'computer savvy', and therefore doesn't know where the authorisation key is, hence the need for this person to contact Yahoo.

You take the following steps:

1) Ensure the domain is not in 'locked' status at the current registarar

although a domain dossier displays "Status: Ok" I see from http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/ that Yahoo automatically locks domains when people sign up, so it may be locked.

No need for step 2 , as there already is an account at Enom. Step 3 cannot be done , because transfers need the authorisation key, the person doesn't know it, and Yahoo either do not want to supply it (to the domain owner), or they have completely misunderstood the request from the domain owner.

Step 4 - the email address is fine, that was one thing I checked, before even trying to initiate the transfer from Enom, because I have been 'caught' with that one, in the past. Step 5 can't be done, no authorisation code yet, and we have been doing step 6 for a number of days now.

That is a Yahoo misunderstanding. The person has 2 domains, all they want to do is to obtain the authorisation key for one domain. I see no need for closing any accounts at Yahoo at all.

I'm only a third party, I'm just trying to help someone who has the Yahoo! small business account. I do not think they would want to cancel the services/account, because the other domain is to be used, and it seems they will use Yahoo for hosting.

Well, the tough part here is different, it is trying to get Yahoo to understand, that all the person wants, is for Yahoo to assist in obaining the authorisation key. The request to Yahoo was quite clear, copy below, private details commented out .....

Comments: I have been contacted by a person requesting my domain name
'*********.org'. I would like to transfer that domain name to him.
I do not know how to do this. He said I would need an authorization key
to accomplish the transfer. Could you please assist me in this process
as I am unsure of the process? Thank you so much for your help.

With Enom, any authorisation keys are displayed for each domain, usually under the 'whois/contact info' after logging in. I'm sure it is a very simple matter to display the authorisation key, using the Yahoo! small business 'account'.

Thanks for your help,

J

I have forwarded your request to the actual registrar, Melbourne IT. Yahoo is simply a reseller.

Melbourne IT will be contacting the current owner of the domain. It would have been great if Yahoo had given a simple reply like that.

Thanks,

J
